Welcome #UBP2014 bloggers and new readers to 4 Tickets Please! I am thrilled that you have landed on my page. My name is Kristin Fuhrmann-Simmons. I originally hail from Baltimore, Maryland ( I am a full-on, Old-Bay-Seasoning-loving-girl) who now lives on the coast of Maine. Yes, I do put that Old Bay on my lobster rolls and I really miss good lump, backfin crabmeat.
I was not always a writer & blogger. For many years, I was content (but exhausted) as a social worker and therapist. I juggled a full work schedule with the realities of being a mom and wife. That reality changed one bright autumn afternoon in 2008.
I was approached at my local playground by the editor of our town newspaper. My daughters were busy playing on the swings: her son, on the slides. We had met at this park several times before and had made the requisite mommy chit-chat. That day however, the conversation proved different. With one eye on her and one toward my girls, the two of us struck up a decidedly pointed conversation. She told me she wanted to expand the paper, “to get more creative and centered on ‘special interests.'”
She looked at me firmly and said, “Kristin, you’re articulate and you love food. I know you are a good cook from the way you talk about recipes. I need a food writer for our paper.”
I almost aspirated the water I was drinking. “A food writer? You mean, you are handing me a dream job? Just like that?” I gasped, incredulously.
“Well, not just like that. I do need to know that you can write as well as you speak. Send me some clips and we will go from there,” she said.
I had no idea what clips were and set about “googling” the term as soon as I returned home. Two weeks later, with two approved clips (excerpts from bigger articles) under my belt, I became a columnist for the York County Coast Star and York Weekly.
Fast forward six years: I have worked as a food columnist, writer-in-residence in Belize, freelancer for AAA Magazines, Latina Magazine and The Latin Kitchen Blog, and Food Network Magazine. I continue to write and teach Food and Culture at the University of Southern Maine. My life has become filled with joy and a dream profession: I still juggle parenting, work and partnership. I am however, extremely fulfilled.
I am a lover of all-things-food:I love the people behind the scenes AND the people you get to share it with. 4ticketsplease.com was started as a way to augment my writing work and to share my personal and family experiences. 4 tickets please is home to travel advice, food stories and most recently, my daughter’s own blog posts.
My goal is to grow in 2014: 2 posts per week and an audience of 1K daily readership.
A special thanks to Susan and Janice at 5minutesformom.com and to all the generous people who have sponsored this week to make it a success!
